Key areas of focus help us to define where and what we are going to work on. The key areas of focus help the community to respond to the immediate challenges and opportunities it faces. The immediate key areas of focus are education, community resilience, employment, health and wellbeing.

Education

ED1 – Create a national African cultural competency programme to embed in NZ schools to teach African values, experiences and stories for education purposes
ED2 – Create greater strategic alignment between the community and tertiary education to strengthen the academic pathways for African learners
ED3 – Develop an internal African cultural strategy to discuss and agree on the teaching and learning priorities of community learners and their families
ED4– Establish and offer 100 African scholarships for African youth into universities and vocational programmes in collaboration with our partners. These scholarships should increase by 10% every year
ED5 – Provide educational collateral targeted at Africans about business, safety and health issues
ED6 – Collaborate with mana whenua to establish cross cultural educational materials for both
communities to learn about each other
ED7 – Appoint capable education ‘guardians’ in the community whose role it is to lead this work,
coordinate resources and provide advise and liaise with key partners
Community Resilience

CR1 – Creating specific African cultural events to celebrate festivities, art, sports and culture – African Film Festival
CR2 – Establishing leadership group that will form the nucleus for the national entity with clear distinctions between national, regional and country organisations
CR3 – Establishing regional community hubs and a national centre as a place of gathering for the community, identify land and building that is fit for purpose
CR4 – Partnering with Ministry for Ethnic Communities to establish a plan to address current
barriers facing the African community
CR5 – Co-develop with institutes of directors in African learners/governance modules
CR6 – Increase African representation in Local and Central Government and Government agencies
CR7 – Gather statistical data in relation to our key areas of focus in collaboration with government
agencies by the end of 2022

EM1 – Research/data gathering to gain current state of employment of African community in Aotearoa
EM2 – Partner with English language training provider to deliver English language course for community members and particularly new migrants
EM3 – Partner with businesses at national and regional levels to ensure that suitable employment can be identified for community members
EM4 – Work with NZQA to create greater alignment between African qualifications and NZ-based ones
EM5 – Address current issues regarding employment in the African Community, and assist with possible solutions that instigate tangible change that empower the community

Health and Wellbeing

HW1 – Undertake current state assessment to better identify the current health and wellbeing of
the African community on terms defined by the community
HW2 – Appoint health & wellbeing ‘guardians in the community whose role it is to lead this work, coordinate resources and provide advise and liaise with key partner
HW3 – Partner with appropriate national identities to support and respond the health and wellbeing needs of the community and alleviate barriers to access (post-assessment)
HW4 – Partner with Kainga Ora to collectively curate educational collateral that target the African Community regarding home ownership and how to improve housing conditions
